After speaking with him about that mission to capture Che in Bolivia, he asked if I would like for him to sign and dedicate to me a copy of the last photograph ever taken of Che. I hesitated, because I did not know how I felt about his death. My grandmother once told me that in the beginning of the revolution, Che had passed through my family’s town on the way to a firefight in the mountains. A photo had been taken of Che cradling my father, an infant at the time. It was later destroyed to insure that Batista’s operatives would never find out about the encounter. </p> <p>My grandfather had been skeptical of Fidel’s slogans, but he fed Che and some of his comrades during that visit because he thought Che seemed like a honest and principled man. In exchange for his hospitality, Che gave him optimism for Cuba’s future. Soon after, the rebels finally stormed into Havana. My grandfather’s coffee plantation was nationalized by the revolutionary government and my family was financially crippled. This spurred my family’s migration to the U.S., and decades later I was talking to Che’s executioner in a banquet hall in Lyndhurst, NJ. I was staggered. Was I speaking to the villain, or another one of history’s anonymous heroes?
